Hard or softwood for your fire?

There’s nothing like the roar of an open fire during the cold winter months, especially a fire with real wood logs burning away. If you live in the West Midlands, and are looking for a local family firm to deliver your firewood – whether you want it netted or in bulk - look no further than Logs West Midlands. You may know us from our family business, S.L. Howes, because we’ve been serving the people of the West Midlands for 50 years.

We can supply you with both hard and softwood logs for your fires, but what’s the difference, and what's the best in terms of fuel?

Whichever you choose, we’ll make sure it’s dried for you. Wood which still contains moisture can leave behind a corrosive tar-like residue which will damage your flue, and is smokier than dried wood.

Hardwood tends to be timber from deciduous trees, such as oak, cherry or maple. It is generally regarded as a better choice than softwood, but is usually more expensive. Hardwood is denser than softwoods, giving a longer burning time. This means fewer trips to the fire to top it up. Burning more steadily, and giving more heat, there’s minimal smoke emission, just plenty of warmth to enjoy.

Softwoods come from evergreen tree species such as conifers. If the tree has needles, rather than leaves, it’s probably a softwood timber. It’s less dense than hardwood, which has advantages and disadvantages. It’s much lighter to transport, and this lightness means that it will catch alight quickly. However, its lack of density means that it is easier for the flame to eat through it, so it will be used up far quicker than a hardwood would. If you’re looking for wood to cook food on a charcoal BBQ with, go for softwood, as it gives off more smoke, which will flavour any food you cook on it.
