How to get your BBQ going

The sun is out, and there’s no better way to celebrate the arrival of summer and the hot weather – which can be a bit of a rarity in the Midlands - than with a wonderful BBQ with your friends and family. A BBQ is the perfect informal get-together, with no need to worry about sitting at the table and finding room for everyone.

People can sometimes worry about getting a BBQ going, but with good quality kindling and charcoal, it’s really no problem. Forget all the fancy things you’ve been told and remember the fire triangle which you probably learnt at school: a fire needs air, heat and fuel. Across Bewdley, Stourport, Kidderminster and the Wyre Forest, you can find everything you need for a great BBQ, so it’s a matter of building up the fire however you prefer – either a lattice style tower, where the kindling pieces criss-cross, or a pyramid technique. For a beginner, the tower style is the most reliable.

Once you’ve got it going well, the charcoal will catch, and when the flames have died down to glowing embers, you’re ready to go. As for what food to cook, burgers and sausages are always a good standby, but if you fancy doing something a little bit more adventurous, steak and chicken taste great cooked over charcoal, with a lovely smoked flavour. Fish works well too, either cooked in foil parcels or directly on the grill.

Have some salads and sides ready, ketchup and cheese for the burgers, and a stack of plates for your guests to help themselves, with drinks keeping cold in the fridge or cool box. And it’s always worth having a golfing umbrella to hand, just in case the great British weather lets you down at the last moment – no need to spoil the fun!
